  5. By now, most of you have probably seen
  6. several magazine articles (or read my
  7. comments in the last ACES bulletin)
  8. describing this new online service that
  9. is designed especially for Apple users
  10. (II and MAC). By the time you read this
  11. the Apple dealers should have the
  12. subscription packets available, or you
  13. may have received one of the special
  14. mail offers. In any case, I would like
  15. to share my latest experiences and
  16. thoughts on this subject.

  18. I have been using this service since
  19. April, as a Beta Tester. During that
  20. time it was new, exciting, helpful...
  21. and free. Now it costs $6 per hour (non
  22. prime time) and the novelty has worn
  23. off, so perhaps I can be a bit more
  24. objective in my evaluation.

  26. I find the service provides a source of
  27. Apple experience and info that is quite
  28. broad, and accessible. It is also my
  29. primary source of new public domain
  30. software for our library. Other
  31. services may have some of the same
  32. things, but you have to root it out
  33. from the 'other' computer info. I also
  34. find it nice to see the Apple news
  35. releases on the day of their issue and
  36. have a direct line to Apple (Cupertino)
  37. for technical info I can't find
  38. elsewhere. I have gotten answers to
  39. questions sooner than the 2-days they
  40. promise. There are a slew of software
  41. and hardware vendors on the "Industry
  42. Connection" that can give you a
  43. straight answer on their products. I
  44. once found the forums useful and fun
  45. (lectures and open questions), but they
  46. have become repetitive. They cover lots
  47. of subjects, and the monthly magazine
  48. lets you know when something that
  49. interests you is scheduled.

  51. There is much more offered, but I
  52. personally haven't found adequate value
  53. or entertainment to attend:
  54.      - general chat in the Lobby, LAPUB
  55.      - quizzes, trivia, auctions
  56.      - clubs (Liars, Sci Fi, comedy ++)
  57. These offerings, and the Financial,
  58. News, Reference and Education sections
  59. may be attractive to some, but I don't
  60. think they are the most cost effective
  61. place to get this info.

  63. I have concluded this service fills an
  64. important nook in my needs, but suggest
  65. you should check it out with a
  66. subscriber friend before plunking down
  67. your $35 annual subscription fee.
  68. Calling the service is a local call and
  69. no extra charges are made except for
  70. the Buying Service and the University
  71. courses. If you decide to sign up, it
  72. would be a good idea to see if the
  73. system has finally activated its new
  74. library files. They have been promising
  75. for months to provide new uploads and
  76. summaries of the forums, but most of
  77. the files have been unchanged for
  78. months. I'd wait till they are in full
  79. business before signing up.
